Journey to Los Angeles
Prepare to share Christ in a variety of communities throughout the city of Los Angeles. Expect to grow in your relationship with God through small group Bible studies, one-on-one disciplemaking, ministry training, nights worshiping together and learning from a variety of speakers taking you deeper into the gospel.
You'll stay very close to downtown in the community of Pico-Union. This densely populated, mostly Latino neighborhood will become your home. Only a 10-minute walk from L.A. Live, a bustling entertainment center next to the Los Angeles Convention Center, you'll spend time becoming a part of this inner-city community where some of our staff live. Your base camp is the First Evangelical Free Church of Los Angeles.
This project is intentionally small (with a maximum of 15 students) to focus on leadership development and building relationships with each other and with people in the community. Get ready to invite people from the neighborhood to weekly meetings to study the gospel. Living, eating and ministering in this community will be one of your many project highlights. (Did we mention we have the best chef around?)
During your time in Los Angeles you might minister to children in a youth development center, lead a Bible club at a park, help with manual labor or evangelistic outreach in various areas of the city, or work at a homeless mission. If you are a Spanish speaker, we will have many opportunities for you to use your skill. We emphasize cross-cultural ministry opportunities and training so you are well-equipped for a lifetime of ministry.
University Internship Credit Option:
Your University may grant internship credit for your inner-city summer community experience. This is especially true of those majoring in sociology, psychology, elementary or secondary education, early childhood development, or social work. Students must petition their school's department and satisfy any application fees. Typically, schools require students to keep a daily journal of their experience and submit a paper highlighting specific aspects of their summer effort. The project staff will act as your on-sight internship advisers, and will verify your learning experience to the college.
Los Angeles County, which includes the city of Los Angeles, contains the highest population in the nation, with more than 18 million. With people from more than 140 countries speaking 224 different identified languages, opportunities for cross-cultural ministry are endless in one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the U.S.
Within walking distance or a short bus ride from your site, you will find Chinatown, Historic Filipinotown, Koreatown, Little Tokyo and Thai Town.
"Off-duty" may find you at the brand new "L.A. LIVE" entertainment center in the middle of downtown L.A., Dodger Stadium, Hollywood, the Getty Museum or relaxing at the beach. Summer in the "City of Angels" is a great place to experience growth in cross-cultural ministry, evangelism and disciplemaking.
