Los Angeles, California
In Los Angeles, you will partner with First Evangelical Free Church of LA, in the Pico-Union neighborhood, the fourth most-crowded neighborhood in LA. Ministering to children and families is a high value at First Evangelical Free Church because a quarter of all children in Los Angeles County live in poverty. Incoming teams will lead Vacation Bible School ministry for five days, getting to know the kids and family in Pico-Union. Since this is a leadership development experience, you'll be largely responsible for the planning and execution of the VBS.
In addition, Los Angeles has experienced a dramatic increase in homelessness in the past few years, so students will gain a deeper understanding of issues and implications of homelessness in very tangible ways through engaging the neighborhood’s homeless in gospel conversations and poverty simulation.
Daily training on topics of evangelism, poverty, gospel community and biblical justice are led by church and community leaders from various parts of the city. While learning about the community you are serving, you'll see the work God is doing in one of the most densely populated and ethnically diverse communities west of the Mississippi.
While there is little unscheduled time, we do create time for daily team devotional and debrief, giving you an opportunity to connect with your team and discuss what they are learning and how it translates to their context at home.
In this holistic church community, you'll share a meal or play basketball or soccer with neighbors during the evening hours. If you enjoy informal life-on-life ministry, this is the trip for you.
