Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Destination Overview
Rio de Janeiro is a cosmopolitan metropolis, known worldwide for its beauty and its natural resources, such as the Christ the Redeemer and the Tijuca Forest attracting more than 2 million foreign visitors each year. Rio has received major events like the World Cup (2014) and the Olympics (2016). Brazil is also known for its 1,000 slums or *favelas* (shanty towns) plagued by urban plight. Thus, Rio has a visible and hidden side. Our ministry partners live with a passion for life and know how to enjoy the beauty of Rio. These same Brazilians love God and are very present in Rio, offering a new mercy and compassion that only Jesus can give. Ministry Partners: • Caju Life Church • Christian Surfers Brazil • Redemis: Salt and Light • Celivre: Community Evangelical Free Church

Trip Overview

How You'll Serve

We live and minister in the global and coastal city of Rio de Janeiro. Rio is a melting pot for religious, philosophical and political Ideas. There is nothing off limits. It is a city defined by its high mountain peaks and views, lush, green, rain forest, and golden beaches with its emerald sea. It is hard to know what Cariocans (Rio natives) love more... Nature, food and festas (parties) or football. They are characterized by their love for life. Though they are a spiritual people they have a form of religion without its power. Many are slaves to idolatry, loving the created things more than their Creator. Addictions, immorality and poverty result in broken families which leave children vulnerable with poor or no education and no true sense of right and wrong. Other kids have good families but are far from home, living in a new country, trying to learn a new language and are emotionally vulnerable. We, the local church and our Gospel partners invite you to join us relating, listening, learning and of course serving children from all walks of life. Come, hike a mountain, surf a wave, visit a Favela (poor Neighborhood)- teach English and share the love of Jesus in both words and works. And witness the wonder of Gospel transformation in the lives of children and their families.

Rio is a strategic place to bring youth because it is a youthful culture, open to sharing the Gospel, valuing relationship and bigger than life. Teens who serve here will feel compassion, practice community, share the Gospel in word and deed and exercise courage.

Some of the ministries you may be partnering in include:

  • ESL – English as Second Language training. This would mainly be conversational English.
  • VBS/Bible Clubs
  • Assortment of activities like crafts, sport and the arts (depending on the interests and abilities of the each group).
