Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic and one of the Caribbean's oldest cities. Its walled, cobblestoned historic core, the Zona Colonial (the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the Americas), has buildings that date to the 1500s, including the cathedral, which was the first built in the New World. Santo Domingo is also the most modern and dynamic metropolis in the Caribbean. La Capital—as it is affectionately called—epitomizes the pulse of Dominican culture, where the old and the new converge seamlessly…from centuries old architecture and history, to large shopping malls and art galleries.
Meet Out Missionaries
Gordy and Bear G. have been missionaries for close to forty years. For over half of that time they took high school students overseas to serve with ReachGlobal missionaries and national partners around the world on summer-long short-term missions. They have served in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Central Europe. Most recently they served in Central Africa mentoring and coaching young leaders of grass-roots Christian organizations. The Santo Domingo City Team has the same goal of discipleship and leadership development among university students across all of RG's partner churches in the city.
Dominican Republic University students face the same challenges that students face in the United States. Professors, teachers, and peers can be hostile and dismissive of personal Christian faith, and aggressive in opposing any expression of the Gospel. The Santo Domingo City team is focused on discipleship with an eye to helping Christian university students reach their peers with the Gospel and integrating them in house churches that are being planted throughout the city.
The local church in Santo Domingo has changed how they gather, from one large congregational gathering to several small house churches. While this has proven fruitful for the community, it has caused the college-age students to be dispersed among the house churches. As an Apex Team you will be building relationships with these students, strengthening their faith, and providing much needed community.
We are looking for students to come prepared to share their faith and provide a well reasoned explanation for why they have made the decision to follow Jesus. This will encourage students who are wrestling with cultural and university pressures to walk away from their faith.
How You'll Serve
You will personally serve side by side with young people from the Dominican Republic, encouraging them as followers of Jesus, and in outreach among college students, as well as discussing Jesus and issues of faith. Teaching conversational English will be a great way to interact with Dominican students who study English and must pass English exams to enter the university.
Some of the ministries you may be partnering in include:
- Encourage Dominican students through mutual discipleship as you grow deeper in your spiritual-walks together.
- Individual or small group Bible studies
- You will be investing in, learning from and participating in local house churches.
- Flavors of Apologetics as you walk along college-age students wrestling with their faith.
- ESL – English as Second Language training. This would mainly be conversational English
