Taipei, Taiwan: Mission and Leadership Team
Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, is a modern metropolis. The skyline is crowned by the 509 meters (1700 ft) tall, bamboo-shaped Taipei 101 skyscraper, with upscale shops at the base and a rapid elevator to an observatory near the top. Although Taipei is an economic and technology hub for Asia, most of its people have never heard the gospel. Most Taiwanese people practice Buddhism and Taoism mixed with ancestor worship. In recent years a growing interest in learning English has provided open doors to build relationships with Taiwanese youth and young adults.
Meet our Missionaries
The Taiwan team leaders have recently transitioned from ministering in Mainland China for 15 years. They have a vision to help people develop skills for effective ministry and learn to walk in faith serving others. God has provided each believer with gifts that can show God’s love to others. Also on the team is theological educator that is working with a local seminary.
Taipei you will experience a blend of serving on the ground with the local missionaries as well as helping the missionary to host US youth groups as they come and serve for part of your time. You will be learning the local mission and multiplying that mission by leading others in it along with you.
The work of ReachGlobal in Taiwan is in the pioneering stage. God has been drawing many missionaries to Taiwan in recent years. After a long period of resistance to the gospel, it seems that a spiritual awakening is about to occur. Political tension with Mainland China has created insecurity about the future. This provides a situation for the message of Jesus to provide an anchor in the storm. This tension also creates an interest in Christianity as people turn toward western countries rather than Mainland China.
How You'll Serve
There is a multi-national effort to establish new churches and train workers to take the gospel to the ends of the earth. This new work is focusing on three initiatives
- A bi-lingual church
- Reaching the Hakka Chinese – an unreached people group
- Establishing missional churches
On part of your mission experience, you will personally serve with a Taiwanese denomination that has effectively used English camps to reach their neighborhoods.
Some of the ministries you may be partnering in include:
- ESL – English as Second Language training. This would mainly be conversational English.
- Participate in various activities (skits, games, etc…) with local students to build relationship and create gospel bridges.
On the rest of your mission experience you will be an “alongsider” modeling, mentoring, encouraging, and serving alongside the US students. See the attached ministry description for details.
You will receive a stipend of at least $300 for every week you serve with youth groups. We expect up to 2 weeks of youth groups in Taipei ($300 x 2 weeks = $600). The stipend could go up a little depending on the college/high school student ratio.
