Journey to Baltimore

TRIP OVERVIEW This 7 week Apex experience will take you into the diverse neighborhoods of Baltimore. These weeks will be filled with opportunities to serve along side leaders and members of Stillmeadow Community Fellowship where you will learn more about their heart and ministry for the people of Baltimore. This church and community will be your "home" for the summer.

Stillmeadow is a community church and their desire is to continue to develop ministries that support the well-being of their neighbors. Apex city team members will be trained through hands-on experience that may include ministering to children in the community through a free lunch program or be part of the development of “Peace Park", a space of spiritual refreshment for the community, along with many other opportunities partnering with other churches and local ministries to provide for the physical & spiritual needs of the community. The goal of this Apex experience is that individuals learn to lead as they serve in the city.

Apex is committed to your growth as a disciple: It is of great value that we see Apex city team members grow in their ability to speak and apply the gospel to all of life. The city provides a perfect training ground to learn from many different people (culture, ethnicity, economic, political, religious) and the opportunity to show impartial justice to those who are affected by these seemingly dividing lines. It is only when we cross over these barriers and enter into missional relationships that are centered on the gospel that we can begin to see Christ transform lives of ALL people.

Apex desires to help you lead others and make disciples: As an Apex city team member, you will be trained by Apex staff and local pastors on specific focus topics for the city and group. We desire to see you grow in your God given gifts and leadership abilities. We are committed to helping you be equipped for the good work that God has prepared for you to do. (Ephesians 2:10) Unique to our state side Apex for college age experiences you will serve middle school and high school students who are in Baltimore for their own week long Apex trips. You will have opportunities to provide leadership and develop relationships with these students to help them take next steps in their own faith journey.

Join us this summer in Baltimore, Maryland. Our hope is that this urban experience will expose you to diverse approaches to ministry and will introduce you to church and local leaders who are transforming their communities with the gospel in fresh ways.

Destination Overview

Nicknamed “Charm City,” Baltimore City is a city of many US firsts - the first post office system in 1774, the first telegraph line, the first commercial/passenger railroad (B&O), the first professional sports organization – The Maryland Jockey Club. The Star-Spangled Banner was written here. Babe Ruth was born and raised here. Adding to its place in history, in the 19th century, Baltimore was the second largest port city for incoming immigrants to America.

Once the 6th largest city in the US, Baltimore City experienced a steady population decline. After losing nearly 1/3 of its population, it now ranks 26th. While Maryland is now the richest state in the country, Baltimore City’s demographics from the U.S. Census Bureau show 24% of the city’s inhabitants live below the poverty line.

Like many US cities, Baltimore’s population has stabilized and some areas of the city are experiencing rebirth. Baltimore is home to the famed Johns Hopkins University, the “snowball,” amazing crab cakes and Old Bay.
